In Florida’s Panhandle 100 miles or so southwest of capital Tallahassee, Bay County’s Panama City -- "Wreck Capital of the South" -- is legendary as a family-oriented subtropical playground with friendly ways, emerald green waters, and sugary white beaches. Powdery sands are composed of quartz crystals, broken down over time, bleached, polished, and deposited by tides on the Gulf of Mexico shoreline. Kiteboarding, windsurfing, and jet ski action are popular, and anglers populate three fishing piers. Besides beach fun, attractions include water and amusement parks, a zoo, marine park, racetrack, miniature golf, and notable opportunity for wreck diving. Historic wrecks include a 441-foot WWII liberty ship, a 160-foot coastal freighter, the S.S. Tarpon, and a 110-foot tug, The Grey Ghost, as well as the Gulf of Mexico’s best known wreck, the 465-foot Empire Mica. April through September is the best time for diving, and the Panama City Marine Institute has developed 50 artificial reefs off Panama City Beach, with natural reefs just a few miles off shore.
East of the city, the forested 1,260-acre St. Andrews State Park has dunes covered with sea oats, fresh and saltwater marshes, a lagoon swimming hole, fishing jetties and hiking trails, plus 1.5 miles of beach and a couple of campgrounds. Shoppers head for the Panama City Mall, and discount outlets are plentiful. The Panama City Winery is home of citrus, berry and fruit wines. Attracting spring breakers and others in the mood for after dark fun, nightspots range from Buck Wild Saloon, Patches Pub, and Foghorn’s to Hook’s Grille & Grog, Spinnaker Beach Club & Paradise Grill, Karaoke Kafe and Lowe’s Hurricane Lounge. Seafood, from gulf scallops to swordfish steak, stars at many, if not most, area dining spots, with Cajun influence often evident in gumbos, etoufees, and such. Fresh catch unloads daily at the docks and some restaurants let patrons pick entrées fresh from the boat. With more than 20,000 hotel, motel and condo units, Greater Panama City lodging options fit most budgets.
